Asia 490-003 Turkey: Beyond Tradition and Modernity
Turkey is located between two continents, Asia and Europe and is considered a bridge between different cultures and civilizations.  Famous poet Nazim Hikmet (1902-1963) describes Turkey’s picture on the map in his poem “Invitation.”  He writes: “Galloping from Far Asia / and jutting out, into the Mediterranean like a mare's head / this country is ours.” Another poet Yahya Kemal Beyatli (1884-1958) describes Turkish as “Turkish is like my mother’s white milk in my mouth fresh, warm, and sweet.”

In this course, we will try to discover Turkey, from 18th century Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic. Turkey historically has been considered the cradle of civilizations. There are layers of history and culture. We will explore Turkey studying Istanbul to Ankara, Mardin to Izmir, and Bursa to Konya through reading primary and secondary sources, listening to music, watching documentaries and movies, and then hopefully we’ll be able to visit Turkey over the summer.

Surprising, amazing, sometimes mysterious, beyond tradition and modernity, sometimes can’t be described but lived, and sometimes breaking all the rules of academics, science, and new findings, Turkey is a colorful place to be discovered.
